Coat of arms designed by me

The municipal coat of arms of Alt Meteln in the Nordwestmecklenburg district (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany)

I designed the coat of arms for Alt Meteln in the summer of 2021 and was approved by the community in December 2021. The application for official approval by the state main archive in Schwerin was submitted on October 11, 2022. The coat of arms was finally officially approved on July 8, 2024.

The official emblazon (in German) reads:

In Blau ein erniedrigter goldener Schild, sein oberer Rand wellenförmig zu fünf Wellen. Im Schild zwei blaue schräggekreuzte Giebelbretter mit einander abgewandten Pferdeköpfen, das schräge vorn. Über dem Schild balkenweise drei goldene Glocken mit Eisenbändern und Klöppel. Der Schild begleitet an seinen Flanken unter den Glocken von sieben aufrecht gestellten goldenen Eichenblättern.

Blue and gold stand for Alt Meteln's proximity to the state capital Schwerin, which is only about 15 kilometers away and whose coat of arms shows a golden knight in blue and whose city colors are yellow and blue. They also represent the blue sky and blue water as well as the yellow grain fields around the town.

The three bells refer to three bells from the belfry of the Gothic brick church of Alt Meteln. These are an important landmark of the place. In the first draft, at the request of the community, they were shown in three different sizes, like the original bells. However, at the request of the state archives, this had to be changed to three bells of the same size.

The two horse heads on the gable of a Mecklenburg hall house (German: Hallenhaus) refer to an important architectural form in Alt Meteln. The hall houses, designed as drive-through houses in the form of a three- or four-column house with clay walls and a thatched roof, offered accommodation for livestock and feed supplies and a small living area for the farming family. In the coat of arms, the horse heads represent the Mecklenburg hall house and thus the farming village of Alt Meteln.

The Aubach, which flows through the vilage, is represented by the wavy line in the coat of arms.

The oak leaves symbolize the heavy and fertile soil around Alt Meteln, on which deciduous trees such as oaks, beeches, linden trees and chestnuts also grow well. The oak tree in particular should be seen as a symbol of eternity in the local coat of arms due to its long lifespan. The seven oak leaves also represent the seven districts of Alt Meteln (village), Hof Meteln, Neu Meteln, Moltenow, Grevenhagen, Böken and Alt Meteln (Ausbau - Rote Flöte).

emblazon (in German):

Ein von Grün und Gold gespaltener Schild, darauf jeweils in verwechselten Tinkturen ein schräger Keil und ein schreitender Pegasus.

The poet's steed Pegasus represents art and wisdom. Especially in my coat of arms I have combined the herald piece of the division with the herald image of the wedge and the shield figure of Pegasus. The gold and green tinctures represent the full spectrum of heraldic tinctures, of which gold is the highest metal and green is the lowest colour.
